🇺🇸 NEW drug combo cuts the risk of dying by 58% in AGGRESSIVE lung cancers cases. Amgen’s drug Imdelltra was added to AstraZeneca’s drug Imfinzi. The patients had small cell lung cancer that had already spread beyond the lung. Half the patients on the combo lived at least 21 months. With Imfinzi alone, it was under 13. Nearly 80% were alive after one year. Without Imdelltra, it was 53%. It worked even when the cancer had spread to the brain or liver. That’s usually the worst news in this disease. About 31,000 Americans get this cancer every year. But these are early results. Everyone in the trial had already been through chemo with no sign of the cancer growing. Amgen says this could almost turn the cancer into something people live with for years. Investors noticed too, with Imdelltra sales up 115% in a year. Source: CNBC / Writer: Bri

🇨🇳 🇯🇵 China is already halfway through its own version of Japan’s lost decades, just without the crash that would make everyone notice. Monetary analyst Jeffrey Snider says every five year plan out of Beijing boils down to one question: “How do we get from where we are today, which is an economy that’s slowly, slowly being strangled and withering to sometime in the future where we’re leading the fourth Industrial Revolution?” Betting a whole economy on technology that doesn’t exist yet leaves Beijing hoping the future shows up before the bill does. @JeffSnider_EDU

🇸🇦🇾🇪 Riyadh reopened two terminals at its airport Saturday night and the Houthis answered within hours: it's still a target, and anyone who flies from it does so at their own risk That is the shape of this war now. The Houthis hit what Saudi Arabia can't function without, the airport that killed 13 and wounded 300 on Oct. 10, the Aramco tower, the Dammam terminal, and Riyadh answers by trying to break the siege of Taiz and bombing fuel lines in Saada. Reuters has the kingdom betting on a ground counteroffensive after the Houthis grabbed Red Sea coastline last month; the WSJ has IRGC officers sitting in Yemen choosing the Saudi targets. Each side is going after the other's lifeline, and neither has cut it. Here's the problem for Riyadh. A capital whose airport reopens under a standing threat is a capital that has already lost control of its own airspace, and Patriots fired at $20,000 drones are a trade the kingdom cannot keep making with a US stockpile that won't recover before 2030. Britain's Typhoons just deployed to help, and CBS says Washington is only now weighing whether to fly cover for the Saudis. So the real forecast: the Houthis will keep hitting Riyadh's airport until either American jets show up over Saada or Riyadh's own offensive takes the Taiz-Aden road and gives Tehran a reason to stop. The first of those is a decision for Trump, and he's about to spend his carriers on Iran instead. Source: Reuters / WSJ / Writer: Daniel

🚨🇮🇱 Tuesday may be the most consequential election in Israel's history, and the 100,000 people in Hostages Square tonight know why: the world has stopped giving Israel the benefit of the doubt The rally was about an inquiry into Oct. 7 that Netanyahu has blocked for three years, and the voices were bereaved fathers and freed hostages. But the subtext in the square was bigger than one commission. It was the sense, said plainly by a first-time voter to AFP, that Israel has to change how the world sees it, and that Tuesday is the last clean chance to do that from the inside. Years of war in Gaza, Lebanon and now Iran have done something no enemy managed: they turned ordinary public opinion in Israel's closest ally against it. AIPAC quit endorsing candidates this week because its name costs votes. A Democrat leading the Michigan Senate race calls Israel a friend who takes your money and starts your fights, and his numbers WENT UP. The prime minister is campaigning on finishing Iran "together" with a president at 31% whose own voters are done with the war. Fair or not, that bill doesn't stop at Israel's border. And as unfair as it is... Jews in Paris, London and on American campuses get judged for decisions made in Jerusalem that they had no part in, and they’re the ones who absorb the hostility when Israel’s conduct goes wrong. The world's message has been delivered loudly enough: change how you fight in Gaza, change how you treat Lebanon, change the assumption that Washington will always write the check. A Netanyahu win promises the “job to finish” with Iran and another year of the same verdict from the same crowds abroad, and that verdict falls on Jews who never cast a ballot in Israel. Tuesday is the day Israelis decide what the rest of the Jewish world has to answer for next. Source: Times of Israel / AFP

🇨🇳 Chinese banks have stopped lending and are piling into government bonds instead. Loans have shrunk to record lows this year, and Jeffrey Snider traces the slide back to 2008, when China bet everything on being the factory floor for customers who eventually stopped buying: “It’s no longer just an economic problem in China. It has become a banking problem in China.” Banks that won’t lend are telling you exactly how much they trust the economy around them. @JeffSnider_EDU

🇨🇳 🇺🇸 The idea that China would overtake the US economy died back in 2008... most people just never noticed. Monetary analyst Jeffrey Snider says the mainstream is roughly 15 years late, because the property collapse, the growth plateau and a factory model that hit its ceiling were all sitting in plain sight: “The idea that China was going to overtake the US died in 2008.” Anyone still bracing for a Chinese takeover is planning around an economy that stopped growing into that role a long time ago. @JeffSnider_EDU

🇮🇷🇺🇸 Iran's chief negotiator cancels his trip to New Delhi before the BRICS forum opens Monday... citing "unforeseen circumstances" Ghalibaf is the speaker of parliament and the man who leads Iran’s talks with Washington. If anyone in Tehran had a good reason to be abroad this week, it was him. The forum runs Oct. 26-27 and Iran is sending a delegation without him. Nobody has explained why. Tehran expects to be bombed. The supreme leader hasn’t been seen in public since the strike that killed his father in February. So the simplest reading is that Iran’s leadership is staying put and out of sight until it knows what Washington is going to do. Source: Al Jazeera / Writer: Daniel

🇺🇸 🇮🇷 Even hawks like Rubio may now see the Iran war as a mistake... and no one around the president wants to be the one to say it. Professor David Gibbs says the people closest to this war are scared of what comes next, which leaves the White House in a place where bad calls go unchallenged: "It's just a very toxic environment that makes it very vulnerable to miscalculations." Wars rarely end well when the people who know better keep their mouths shut.
