🇺🇸 Lila Ibrahim, Google DeepMind's chief AI readiness officer, has a warning for graduates entering the job market: a university degree alone is becoming less convincing to employers.
She suggests that DeepMind is increasingly looking for candidates who can demonstrate that they've continued learning beyond their formal education.
“One credential will tell me what you've learned, but multiple credentials tell me that you have a learning mindset.”
The reasoning is simple. When technology changes faster than universities can update their courses, what someone learned four years ago may matter less than their ability to learn something new tomorrow.
Ibrahim also believes the ability to ask intelligent questions is becoming a critical skill.
“Getting answers is super cheap these days, but actually knowing how to ask really good questions is getting harder and harder.”
In practical terms, graduates who build projects, teach themselves new skills and demonstrate independent thinking could have an advantage over those relying entirely on academic qualifications.
AI is now transforming the job market into a more meritocratic system, where competence matters more than increasingly easy-to-obtain degrees, however much that may offend DEI ideologues.
