🇱🇧 A $13 chicken sandwich in Beirut has poured a whole gas station's worth of fuel onto the debate over Lebanon's extreme levels of inequality.
It started with a trendy restaurant introducing a healthier version of the popular chicken shish taouk sandwich, charging nearly twice the usual price.
The price sparked outrage in a country where the economy has shrunk by nearly 40% since its financial collapse in 2019.
According to UNICEF, four in five Lebanese households struggle to afford basic necessities, while inflation is expected to reach 17.5%.
Electricity costs have also skyrocketed, with private generator rates rising nearly 60% since February, leaving some households paying hundreds of dollars monthly on a minimum wage of just $400!
Meanwhile, economist Sami Nader says 22 restaurants closed last month alone, reflecting the collapse of Lebanon's middle class.
Of course, at the end of the day, the kind of sandwich you have for lunch says everything about the kind of life you have.

@MarioNawfal The sandwich is just a symbol. The real story is the middle class disappearing while basics become luxuries.
