🇪🇺 Heatwaves in Europe may have caused more than 50,000 deaths during the summer of 2026, according to a new study, making it the deadliest summer on record for heat-related fatalities in the cities examined.
Researchers studied 854 European cities and estimated 50,391 deaths between June and August, a 71% increase from the previous record in 2022.
Here's the breakdown for the five worst-affected countries:
• 🇮🇹 Italy: 13,303 deaths
• 🇫🇷 France: 7,268 deaths
• 🇪🇸 Spain: 6,824 deaths
• 🇩🇪 Germany: 6,340 deaths
• 🇬🇧 United Kingdom: 4,354 deaths
Researchers estimate that around 32,600 of the deaths were linked to additional warming caused by human activity.
More than half of those who died were aged 85 or older, though over 800 deaths were recorded among people aged 20 to 44.
And the actual toll could be even higher, as the study covered cities representing only around 40% of the population in the countries examined.
The figures are modeled estimates rather than individually confirmed deaths, but it might be time for Europe to get deadly serious about air conditioning.

@MarioNawfal I feel so ignorant asking this, but why not just get wall units or swamp coolers.
Is it an energy cost issue only?
