The reason is that these flights were sold under Delta’s flight code, which means U.S. safety rules applied to them. And those rules ban U.S. operators from flying through restricted parts of the airspace managed from Baghdad, because of the safety risk. Even so, KLM ran more than 100 of these flights and Air France more than 30, between 2022 and 2025. Spread over 130-plus flights, that works out to less than $3,270 a flight. The IRGC says the ships, carrying over 4.5M barrels of crude between them, were using the southern route Tehran calls unauthorized when the mines went off. It says both caught fire and lost engine power, and their crews reportedly abandoned ship. Iran has made several claims like this in the past, with little outside proof so far.
