🇺🇸🇨🇦 Trump may cut some Canada tariffs to help a Republican senator win
Trump is expected to drop 50% tariffs on some Canadian farm and forestry goods, possibly as soon as today, though other Canadian products could get hit to balance it out.
The aim is to help Susan Collins, a moderate Republican from Maine, a state that leans heavily on trade with Canada. She has broken with Trump on tariffs, and her race against Democrat Troy Jackson is neck-and-neck heading into the November 3 midterms.
The White House says any reports are speculation until it announces something itself.
Last month the administration lifted tariffs on Canadian road salt and cement, and Collins took the credit. Jackson’s answer was that Mainers “can’t eat road salt.”
This time it’s food on the list, which makes that line a lot harder to use.
