The IRGC says the ships, carrying over 4.5M barrels of crude between them, were using the southern route Tehran calls unauthorized when the mines went off. It says both caught fire and lost engine power, and their crews reportedly abandoned ship. Iran has made several claims like this in the past, with little outside proof so far. The U.S. military has called earlier mine claims false, and a U.S. Navy-led maritime center said one from October 17 had no evidence behind it.
