🇺🇸 A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to 30 years in a U.S. prison for his role in a human smuggling operation that left 53 migrants dead inside a sweltering tractor-trailer in Texas.
Rigoberto Ramon Miranda Orozco, 50, admitted to arranging travel and accommodations for migrants involved in the deadly June 2022 operation.
The victims were trapped inside a trailer without functioning air conditioning during a three-hour journey from Laredo to San Antonio, with temperatures becoming unbearable.
Investigators discovered 48 people dead inside the abandoned trailer, while another five later died in hospitals.
Prosecutors revealed that migrants had paid smugglers up to $15,000 each, with investigators finding discarded clothing and claw marks on the trailer walls as passengers desperately tried to escape.
Nearly 20 people have been convicted in the U.S. and Guatemala over the tragedy, including the operation's U.S.-based leader, who received a life sentence.
The case remains one of the deadliest human smuggling disasters in U.S. history.

@MarioNawfal Harsh accountability is essential, but root causes matter too. Both your perspective and his @TheHarrisonView perspective are worth learning from.
