They found signs that the core and mantle have been exchanging material throughout Earth’s history. Volcanic rocks from Iceland and Baffin Island in Canada hold a clue. Some have unusually low ratios of deuterium, a heavier form of hydrogen, to ordinary hydrogen, which may point to hydrogen from Earth’s early history. The researchers suggest hydrogen escaping from the core could explain that. Helium and tungsten isotopes in volcanic rocks could point the same way, toward material rising from the core.
