They found signs that the core and mantle have been exchanging material throughout Earth’s history. Volcanic rocks from Iceland and Baffin Island in Canada hold a clue. Some have unusually low ratios of deuterium, a heavier form of hydrogen, to ordinary hydrogen, which may point to hydrogen from Earth’s early history.
