🇺🇸🇮🇷 The U.S. may be trying to provoke Iran into striking first.
I found something particularly troubling in my conversation with Alan Eyre, former U.S. diplomat who helped negotiate the Iran nuclear deal.
He believes another round of American strikes against Iran is highly likely. But what caught my attention was his theory about how it might begin.
With additional U.S. military assets moving into the region and reports of Israeli aircraft operating near Iraqi airspace, Eyre wonders whether Washington is deliberately testing Tehran's nerves.
Iran has already been caught off guard twice. Its leadership has made clear it doesn't intend to let that happen again.
And that creates a dangerous possibility.
What if the military buildup is partly designed to make Iran believe an attack is imminent, pushing Tehran to strike first?
Washington could then present its own offensive as retaliation rather than a decision to restart the war.
Eyre isn't claiming to know that's the plan. But he sees a serious risk of another conflict, with Israel pursuing regime change and Washington's ultimate objective still unclear.
The unsettling part is how easily preparations meant to intimidate an adversary could become the very thing that triggers the next war.
