🇺🇸🇨🇳 Trump's answer to the AI race with China is to put everyone at the same dinner table. Jensen Huang, Sam Altman and Tim Cook are all expected at next week's state dinner for Xi, and AI is the real item on the menu. Huang's invite is the loud one, since Beijing has spent years hunting for ways around the U.S. ban on his best Nvidia chips, and now he's eating dinner with the man doing the hunting. The ban hasn't worked that well anyway, with Chinese open-weight models already breathing down the necks of American labs. Trump officials are even weighing a private sit-down with the tech bosses on the sidelines of the visit. A White House official said Trump invited "several great American business leaders" because he will always prioritize making good deals for the country. The guest list tells you exactly what this dinner is really about. Source: CNBC / Writer: Daniyal

Starship has been to space before. This time, it plans to go around Earth. Flight 14 is targeting September 22 for Starship’s first true orbital insertion, roughly 275 km up and six full laps around the planet. If all goes to plan, it’ll deploy 26 Starlink V3 satellites before deorbiting and coming back down over the Pacific. Up until now, Starship went to space and came back. This time it plans to stay up long enough to circle the world. @SpaceX @Starlink / Writer: Annette, Grok Imagine Designer: Janné

🇺🇸🇮🇷 The U.S. Air Force retired the Predator back in 2018, and Iran may have just retired 2 more. U.S. officials say Iranian forces downed at least 2 MQ-1 drones in recent days, though it's still unclear where they went down or which version they were. If they were old Predators, that's about $8 million gone, but if they were the Army's Gray Eagles, which special forces also fly, the loss could run into tens of millions. Over the Strait of Hormuz, these drones keep constant watch on Iranian military moves and threats to U.S. forces and commercial shipping, and they can carry Hellfire missiles too. U.S. Central Command declined to comment on the latest losses. A Congressional Budget Office report this week counted at least 24 MQ-9 Reapers lost since the war began, worth around $720 million, plus a $150 million MQ-4C Triton. That puts the war's drone losses close to $900 million, and that's before anyone adds these 2 to the bill. Source: CBS News / Writer: Daniyal

This is what the future of Neuralink can look like. A clinical trial participant who lost his voice uses his implant to say “I love you” with his mind. 🇺🇸 A bill to stop AI data centers from dumping their power costs on you passed the House 417–3. Then one senator stopped it. The Ratepayer Protection Act would require states to consider rules making large data centers cover the additional grid costs they create, rather than shifting those costs onto other ratepayers. Sen. Martin Heinrich objected because he argues the House bill does not go far enough and wants stronger, enforceable protections instead. So Washington has achieved one of its favorite outcomes: 417 members agree something should be done. One senator says it should do more. And for now, nothing passes. Writer: Oliver t.co/BykTE1eOjI

🇺🇸🇪🇺 NATO allies are now sitting a 57-question loyalty exam set by the Pentagon. One of the questions asks whether a country has been "publicly supportive of U.S. foreign policy priorities." It's part of a 6-month review of U.S. troops in Europe, and Hegseth has already warned that some countries will fail. He originally wanted to announce a 25,000 troop cut in June, but that would've pushed U.S. forces below the 76,000 minimum Congress set, so the review came instead. That same 25,000 number could come right back once the review ends. Meanwhile, the U.S. is still pouring billions into bases in Britain, Spain and Romania because it needs them for the Iran war. Europe is getting the message that U.S. protection now comes with conditions, and at least 8 NATO countries are already shopping for non-American weapons. Source: Reuters / Writer: Daniyal

🇨🇳🇺🇸🇮🇷 China wants to walk into the Trump summit as the one country that can calm Iran down. Yesterday China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted Iran's foreign minister in Beijing and told Tehran and Washington to cool it, go back to their June peace deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Today Wang was on the phone with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio talking about the Middle East and the "next stage" of high-level talks. Talking to both sides on back-to-back days, just a week before Xi's expected U.S. visit, hardly looks like a coincidence. Beijing has skin in this too, since a closed Hormuz chokes off a big chunk of the oil China imports. If Trump wants Iran sorted, Xi is making sure China has a seat at that table. Trump has already named the date, September 24, and Beijing still won't confirm it. Source: Reuters / Writer: Daniyal

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Neither America nor Iran is actually trying to win this war. 6 months into the Iran war, Ian Bremmer sees something strange beneath all the escalation: Restraint. Iran has not launched major attacks on critical Gulf infrastructure. The U.S. has not sent ground troops, attacked Kharg Island, resumed leadership assassinations or unleashed the full economic campaign threatened against countries still dealing with Tehran. Bremmer calls what is happening instead “price discovery.” Washington and Tehran want incompatible outcomes in the Strait of Hormuz, but both are probing for how much pain the other side can absorb. So they escalate just enough to demonstrate leverage, while trying not to trigger the regional war neither side appears to want. That is why Bremmer remains less worried about a sudden massive escalation than many other analysts. “Neither the Iranians nor the Americans are actually trying to win. They're trying to avoid losing.” That distinction explains a lot. Iran keeps enough pressure on shipping and regional infrastructure to preserve leverage. Washington keeps enough military and economic pressure on Iran to deny Tehran control of the outcome. Neither can force the other to surrender. Neither wants to pay the price of trying. So the war continues, not because either side sees a clear path to victory, but because neither has yet found an acceptable way to lose. @ianbremmer

🇺🇸🇮🇷 The UN just handed Iran its biggest propaganda win of the war, and it came from the U.S. missile file. UN experts say there are "reasonable grounds" to believe the U.S. committed war crimes in 2 strikes on February 28, the first day of the war. One hit a primary school in Minab and killed at least 156 people, 120 of them children, while the other hit a sports complex in Lamerd and killed 21 civilians. The experts said both sites were clearly civilian and called the attacks indiscriminate. An early U.S. military assessment reportedly found the school was likely hit by mistake, possibly because old intel still marked the area as military. Washington denies targeting civilians, says it didn't strike Lamerd that day, and is still investigating Minab. Tehran won't enjoy all of it though, since the same report accuses the regime of crimes against humanity during its crackdown on protesters. The findings aren't binding, but they could be used in international courts down the line. Source: BBC / Writer: Daniyal

🇺🇸🇷🇺🇨🇳🇮🇳 Lindsey Graham's last fight handed Trump a 100% tariff gun. The House passed his Russia and Iran sanctions bill 262-159 yesterday, 2 months after his sudden death, and Trump is expected to sign it. The big part is that Trump can hit the top 5 buyers of Russian oil and gas with tariffs of up to 100%, and China and India could both land on that list. So Beijing and New Delhi now have to choose between cheap Russian oil and easy access to American buyers, unless they start cutting back. Russian banks, oligarchs and the shadow fleet get hit too, and Iran's sanctions stay locked in. Some Democrats warned it gives Trump massive tariff power without forcing him to actually sanction Russia. Putin's best customers just became Trump's leverage. 🇺🇸 The U.S. emergency oil tank is at its emptiest since Reagan's first term. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is down to 285 million barrels, the lowest since November 1982, and roughly 30% lower than a year ago. The drop comes from the 172 million barrel release Trump approved to calm markets after the Iran conflict squeezed shipping through Hormuz. It's set up as an exchange, so the companies taking that oil have to return it to the government later. The timing is tricky though, with Brent still above $105 and WTI above $102. If another major supply shock hits before those barrels come back, the U.S. has a lot less cushion to throw at it. Source: Yahoo Finanace / Writer: Daniyal
