🇵🇱🇺🇦 Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski: "After the victory, Ukraine will be a huge exporter of military technology and we will be learning about how to conduct a modern war from your militaries." Western militaries aren't waiting for the war to end; they're ACTIVELY rewriting their own doctrines based on Ukrainian frontline insight... The country has rapidly become a global laboratory AND pioneer for modern, high-tech warfare. Writer: Michael t.co/ZMZZd8Lcqo

🇫🇷🇯🇴🇱🇧 Macron welcomes Jordan's King Abdullah II to Les Invalides in Paris, the site of the latest round of the Aqaba Process meetings. The talks focus on Lebanon (President Aoun is already in attendance), with an emphasis on "direct operational matters" in the country. France and its partners want to assist the Lebanese Armed Forces with financial aid, equipment, intelligence, and even operational guidance. 🇵🇱🇪🇺 Is Poland becoming the new military powerhouse of Europe? Polish FM Sikorski: "We have more tanks and more brigades than Germany, France and Britain combined that we could deploy." He's not wrong... -Poland is dedicating roughly 4.7-4.8% of its GDP to defense, the highest defense spending % in NATO, surpassing even the U.S. -It fields over 600 main battle tanks, projected to reach 1,100, surpassing the combined tank fleets of the UK, France, and Germany. -And their military is on track to reach an ambitious target of 300,000 active and reserve forces. Not bad for a country of under 40 million people... Writer: Michael t.co/OUdlDZ6tgT

🇺🇸🇨🇳 Washington and Beijing are now discussing a problem that sounds very sci-fi and very real: what happens when military AI moves faster than humans can stop it? Security experts from both countries are proposing new red lines for military AI, including keeping machines away from nuclear launch decisions, making sure humans approve major cyberattacks and setting up a dedicated hotline for AI incidents. The concern is that an autonomous system could malfunction, go beyond its orders or launch a cyber operation against sensitive military infrastructure without anyone actually intending it to happen. The other side might then have only minutes to decide whether it was an accident or the opening move of an attack. That gets especially ugly when both countries have automated systems reacting to each other at machine speed. The proposals would keep humans firmly in control of nuclear weapons and attacks on nuclear command networks, while giving Washington and Beijing a direct line to explain when an AI system goes rogue or does something neither side meant to happen. Neither government has signed onto the plan yet, but it comes ahead of planned U.S.-China AI talks and the expected Trump-Xi meeting next week. The AI race started with chips and chatbots. It’s now getting uncomfortably close to nuclear command systems. Sources: Reuters, Brookings Institution / Writer: Julie

🇺🇸 Trump wants Congress banned from buying stocks. Meanwhile, his own accounts have logged more securities trades than every member of Congress combined since he returned to office. Bloomberg counted roughly 80 trades per market day, including more than 21,000 in 2025 alone. The House bill Trump backs would stop members of Congress, their spouses and dependent children from buying individual stocks. One person it wouldn’t cover: the president. Trump has called for the ban to pass “without delay,” saying lawmakers shouldn’t be able to profit from insider information. The White House says there’s no conflict because Trump’s portfolio is independently managed by third-party financial institutions and neither he nor his family directs the trades. So under the bill as written, Congress gets the trading restriction. The Oval Office doesn’t. Source: Bloomberg / Writer: Julie

🇸🇦 Satellite imagery shows Saudi Arabia already patching up the pipeline Iran-backed militias just blew a hole in. The East-West Pipeline normally moves 4 to 5 million barrels a day to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. The drone strike last week knocked that offline entirely, pulling around 4% of global oil supply out of the market overnight and sending prices climbing. New images show burn scars at the hit pumping station alongside cleanup crews and construction already underway. 🇦🇫🇺🇸🇬🇧 Osama bin Laden’s son may still be alive, and allegedly plotting al-Qaeda’s next attacks on the West. Hamza bin Laden was declared dead in 2019. A new intelligence assessment claims the whole thing was staged. Al-Qaeda and the Haqqani Network, a powerful militant group dubbed the “Sopranos of Afghanistan,” allegedly helped fake his death by having associates openly discuss it over phones they knew were being monitored. It claims Hamza later took over al-Qaeda after Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in 2022 and has since built up networks across Asia and Africa. The assessment warns of potential attacks against the U.S., UK and Europe, including mass-casualty attacks, kidnappings, sabotage and political assassinations. We were just told AI could wipe us out. Now Osama bin Laden’s son may be back too. Lovely week for nightmare fuel. Source: Daily Mail / Writer: Julie

🇺🇸 The Kennedy Center now has a fence around it and no name deal on the wall The Trump-aligned board voted Tuesday to close the main hall for a long renovation. Trump says the building is unsafe and the rebuild does not start unless the courts clear the name. A judge had just blocked putting Trump's name on the facade. Congress already set aside hundreds of millions for the work. Shows are supposed to move elsewhere. The fence is the visible part. The fight is whether a hall named for Kennedy also carries Trump. 🇨🇳🇹🇼 The most dangerous part of a Taiwan war may be China’s ability to turn huge parts of its civilian economy into part of the war effort almost overnight. Taiwan has been drilling for the possibility that routine Chinese pressure could suddenly become a real attack, while Beijing continues near-daily air and naval activity around the island and practices blockade-style operations. If war actually began, China’s advantage would not just be the PLA. Its revised mobilization framework allows Beijing to redirect industry, transport, energy, communications, healthcare and private resources toward wartime priorities. That means civilian factories could be repurposed for drones, vehicles, electronics, spare parts and munitions. Commercial shipyards and transport networks could be folded into military logistics. China’s huge technology workforce could be redirected toward cyber operations, intelligence, electronic warfare and network defense. And its population gives Beijing an enormous pool for reserve forces, logistics, engineering, medical support and replacement manpower. That creates a brutal problem for Taiwan. Taiwan has around 23 million people and very little strategic depth. China has the world’s largest manufacturing base and a population of roughly 1.4 billion. Even with U.S. help, the war would quickly become about more than who has the better missiles or aircraft. It would become a race over who can replace losses faster. The U.S. would be fighting across the Pacific, dependent on long supply lines and forward bases, while China would be operating next to its own factories, ports and transport networks. Washington would also have to replace expensive missiles, aircraft components and naval losses while protecting bases from Chinese strikes. China, meanwhile, could potentially keep feeding the conflict with huge volumes of cheaper drones, missiles, electronics, ships, vehicles and personnel. None of that makes a Chinese victory automatic. An amphibious invasion of Taiwan would still be extraordinarily difficult, and U.S. intervention could impose enormous costs. But China’s sheer ability to convert civilian economic power into military output could become one of the decisive factors. The real nightmare for Taiwan is therefore not just surviving the first wave. It is surviving a war where China can keep replacing what it loses at a scale Taiwan, and potentially even the U.S., would struggle to match. Writer: Mhedi t.co/ZVx7aU5V4E t.co/L3ZRSzfIFt

🇨🇦🇪🇺 Canada could become the EU’s first-ever “associate member,” but before anyone starts printing blue passports, Brussels still has to decide what that actually means. Ursula von der Leyen floated the idea as a way to pull Canada much closer to Europe economically and strategically without offering full membership, which Canada cannot legally qualify for anyway because it is not a European country. The likely arrangement would sit somewhere between today’s CETA trade deal and the much deeper access enjoyed by countries like Norway or Switzerland. That could mean easier trade, closer cooperation on defense, energy, technology and the Arctic, plus expanded travel and education rights. And some of that is already moving beyond theory. Ottawa and Brussels are reportedly discussing Canadian participation in Erasmus+ and deeper access to the EU’s Horizon Europe research program. They’re also looking at broader mutual recognition of professional qualifications, potentially covering doctors, engineers and professors. Canada is also already the first non-European country participating in the EU’s €150 billion SAFE defense-procurement program, so the integration has been quietly getting deeper for a while. Canada’s trade fight with Washington has intensified, Trump slapped 50% tariffs on around $20 billion of Canadian goods, and Ottawa is openly trying to reduce its dependence on the U.S. Still, this is nowhere near a done deal. “Associate membership” does not currently exist as a defined EU status. Member states and Parliament would have to agree on what Canada actually gets, what rules it follows and how much it pays. Countries already waiting years to join may not love seeing Ottawa offered its own bespoke lane. Trump has already called the idea “laughable,” suggested deeper Canadian integration with the EU could amount to a “hostile act,” and threatened Europe with serious tariffs if he decides the arrangement harms U.S. interests. So this is no longer just a quirky new EU membership category. It’s starting to look like part of something much bigger: Canada trying to build itself a lot more room between Washington and Brussels. 🇭🇰🇺🇸 Hong Kong follows Fed and jacks up interest rates as U.S-Iran war supercharges inflation The HKMA lifted its base rate by 25 basis points to 4.25%, tracking the Fed's own hike a day earlier. The root catalyst sits thousands of miles away. The war between the U.S and Iran has been raging since February, pushing oil prices into record territory and re-igniting global inflation. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declared that inflation has been "too high for too long" despite demands from Trump to lower rates. So a conflict in the Gulf turns into higher borrowing costs in Hong Kong, but the timing couldn't be worse. HK GDP growth slowed to 4.3% in Q2, and the local property market is barely finding its footing after years of decline. Geopolitics in the Middle East just sent the bill straight to Hong Kong homeowners. Source: Reuters / Writer: Bri

🇷🇺🇺🇸 Russia just lost another refinery, and somehow that's about to show up at your local gas station. Ukrainian drones hit Russia's Yaroslavl oil refinery tonight, setting it on fire. Another one down. Half of Russia’s 6 biggest diesel plants have now been knocked offline or slashed in output this month alone, with Kirishi fully shut and NORSI and Volgograd running at roughly a quarter of capacity. Here’s the part that trips people up: America produces plenty of its own fuel, but that doesn’t mean Americans are shielded from what’s happening in Russia. Diesel is a globally traded product. When Russian exports collapse, buyers like Turkey and Brazil don’t just go without, they go shopping elsewhere, and “elsewhere” increasingly means U.S. suppliers. Turkey is a pretty clear example. Russia supplied around 85% of its imported diesel last year, but that share has now collapsed to roughly 20%, with U.S. and Indian barrels filling the gap. The problem is that U.S. refineries are already running near full tilt, around 97% to 98% utilization, so there isn’t some huge cushion of spare capacity waiting to absorb a wave of extra foreign demand. That demand simply competes for the same barrels and pushes prices higher. U.S. diesel margins have already surged to record levels, and if Russian refining keeps taking hits, that pressure does not stay neatly contained inside Russia. Produce your own fuel all you want. If the product trades on a world market, the world’s problems still show up in your price at the pump. Sources: Atlantic Council, The Atlantic, NYT, Reuters, PolitiFact / Writer: Julie

🇺🇸 The Fed just did exactly what Trump didn’t want. Interest rates are going UP for the first time in 3 years, with officials unanimously voting for a quarter-point hike to 3.75% to 4%. Trump has spent more than a year demanding dramatically lower rates and, within hours of the decision, was back on Truth Social calling for rates of “1%, or less.” “LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST!” Instead, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, the man Trump picked expecting lower rates, said the Fed had “removed a dose of accommodation.” The problem is inflation still won’t behave. Tariffs, the Iran war pushing up energy prices and an enormous AI investment boom have all added pressure. The Fed now expects inflation to remain above its 2% target until 2029. And this probably isn’t one-and-done. 16 of 18 Fed officials see at least one more hike before the end of the year. 4 officials even expect 2 hikes. What does that mean for your wallet? Credit cards: more expensive almost immediately. Carrying a balance just got uglier. Mortgages: fixed-rate owners are insulated. New buyers and anyone on an adjustable rate, not so much, with mortgage rates already hovering near 7%. Savings: finally, some good news. High-yield accounts, CDs and money-market funds should benefit, assuming your bank actually passes the higher rates on. WalletHub estimates this single quarter-point hike could cost credit-card borrowers around $2 billion in additional interest over the next 12 months. So while Washington fights over whether rates should be 1% or 4%, anyone carrying debt gets to pay for the argument. Sources: Reuters, Bloomberg, Federal Reserve, WalletHub / Writer: Julie
