Illinois university built a real thermal invisibility cloak on a 3D printer
Shelly Zhang’s lab in Urbana-Champaign wrapped a pocket in an aluminum lattice packed with rubbery polymer.
Heat is guided around that pocket instead of lighting it up, so an infrared camera sees a blank spot where the object sits.
The work is in Nature Communications, with Denmark’s Technical University on the design side and NSF money behind it.
They want the next cloak to hide things that are already hot, not just things sitting still in someone else’s heat.
