What is the deep state? Does it exist or is it a political tactic to rally voters? John le Carré defines the “deep state” as a moneyed, cultured élite, the “non-governmental insiders from banking, industry, and commerce” whose access to information allows them to rule in secret. "There's no deep state... The fact that the president and the secretary [of state] can't get their act together on foreign policy is not the deep state. That's just their own incompetence." - Marco Rubio "There is a deep state in this country, and it is a threat to our democracy." - Rand Paul "The idea that there is a deep state conspiracy against President Trump is laughable. It's ridiculous." - David Gergen "The deep state is real and it's dangerous. It's a group of unelected bureaucrats who think they know better than the people." - Tucker Carlson "The notion of a deep state, crouching behind every corner, is a conspiracy theory." - Max Boot "The deep state is a group of unelected bureaucrats who are doing everything they can to undermine President Trump's agenda and thwart the will of the American people." - Jim Jordan How would you define the deep state?
